What does "therapeutic-grade" mean?
Therapeutic-grade (also called therapeutic-grade) in aromatherapy means the pure essential oils have been scientifically tested and have demonstrated therapeutic qualities. In Therapeutic Aromatherapy, the QUALITY of your oils is extremely important. (We are not talking about the essential oils you find at a natural food store, boutique or spa.) Only the highest, purest quality essential oils are used in Therapeutic Aromatherapy. The price of a therapeutic-grade essential oil is usually higher (sometimes much higher) than the store-bought, recreational variety. Therapeutic-grade essential oils are complete in their chemical complexity. They are always organic, wild-harvested, or ethically farmed.

Therapeutic Aromatherapy.
What makes our Pure Essential Oils Therapeutic Grade?
Our therapeutic grade essential oils are:
- single essences, not blends
- complete and pure, nothing is added or subtracted
- come from the exact part of the plant specified -- flowering top means flowering tops -- additional plant matter such as roots, stems and lower branches are not added to the batch to increase the yield
- are ethically harvested by devoted farmers
- are distilled from the exact plant specified
- come from the exact location specified
Our whole family uses HealthSpring therapeutic-grade essential oils everyday.
Methods of Therapeutic Essential Oil Use for Asthmatics
There are many ways to use therapeutic-grade essential oils. I will focus on the main methods an asthmatic might use for therapeutic effect.
French Inhalation
Take a steaming mug of hot water. Add 2-3 drops of your chosen essential oil to the mug. Tent yourself with a large piece of fabric or towel and lean over the steaming mug. Keep your eyes closed. Breathe in the steam until the water has cooled. You may cough a little. This is okay. Adjust the space between your face and the mug as needed for your comfort. Adjust the deepness of your breathing as you get used to this method. Let the hot steam and the therapeutic vapors clean out your lungs and loosen the mucus. As you breathe in, visualize bathing your lungs in loving, healing plant medicine. I do this twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. I then drink the tea after I have finished the inhalation. Use less drops (2-4) for general maintenance and lung health. Use more drops (5-8) for infection or acute issues. Use one to three oils at a time. For example, I use 2 drops each of Eucalyptus True, Ravensara, and Fir Balsam in a steaming mug every morning. I add honey, because I have a sweet tooth and honey also has healing qualities. I then drink the tea after I am done breathing it in. You should only choose this method with guidance from a professional therapeutic aromatherapist, and only for the prescribed length of time.
Some therapeutic-grade essential oils that are excellent for the French Inhalation Method are:
Thymes
Ravensara
Fir Balsam
Rosemary |
Pines
Laurel Leaf
Spruces
Helichrysum |
Eucalyptus
Black Cumin
Myrtle
Himalayan Soti |

Neat on the Skin, or in a Carrier Oil
Use by the drop on the back, sides and front of neck, or behind ears, or as a chest rub, or massaged down the upper to middle spine, or soles of the feet, with particular attention to the balls of the feet for lung health. Pur essential oils are powerful. Use by the drop only. If an essence is "hot" (Oregano, Cinnamon, Savory, or Peppermint, which is very COLD) apply it the soles of your feet only. If you are feeling an uncomfortable burning or cooling sensation, dilute the area with a vegetable, nut or seed oil. Do not get essential oils in your eyes. Listen to your body. Do a test patch first to determine if you can use therapeutic-grade essential oils neat on your skin. Adding the essential oils to a carrier oil before applying topically is the most recommended method, however, may not the most therapeutic way to deliver the healing benefits of the plant and tree kingdom to your body. The absorption rate for essential oils neat on the skin can be around 40% depending on the location of application and the oil. If using more than one essence, apply them in layers, massaging each essence into your skin thoroughly before the next oil.

Diffuser
Diffusing essential oils is a lovely way to disinfect the air in a room, home or office and prevent the spread of illnesses. Use essential oils in a diffuser that have anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. They will assist in supporting the immune system and can help create a relaxed, peaceful atmosphere, which is very important to the asthmatic. Pure essences can help relieve stress, calm fears and anxieties, promote restful sleep, and balance one's emotional life.
